Gum disease or periodontal disease is the most common disease that affects many adults in the U.S. If left untreated or ignored gum disease can become a sever issue. Periodontal diseases is seen most commonly as simple gum inflammation but can become a serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth. In the worst cases scenarios, teeth are lost. It is recommended to see a dentist every six months for regular cleaning and examination to prevent tooth loss, tooth pain and other issues related to oral diseases.
Can gum disease cause health problems beyond the mouth?
There are numerous studies but so far, it has not been determined whether gum disease is the cause of other conditions. However, when your gums become diseased, your entire immune system is weakened. There is a link between gum disease and stroke, heart disease, diabetes and an increased risk for pregnant women when your immune system is under attack. It’s also a simple fact that controlling gum disease can save your teeth, which should be enough cause to see a dentist regularly to avoid or treat serious issues.
